prof headshotI am the news editor for the Fort Myers Beach Observer, a weekly newspaper with a circulation of 8,000 in Fort Myers Beach, Fla. The Observer is a publication of the Breeze Newspapers, located in Cape Coral.

As a journalist for a beach paper, some might say life can’t be that hard — I am, after all, less than a mile from the white sandy beach! As the news editor (and also journalist and photographer) I cover local government, local organizations, and community news; manage our website and social media accounts; produce content for other Breeze publications; manage letters to the editor; and, at the end of the week, work with designers on layout and story placement. Life in paradise keeps me pretty busy.

I believe that journalism has an important role to play in society today: keeping people informed about their society, their government and the world around them, and giving them that information as truthfully and objectively as possible. Local, community journalism becomes increasingly more important as readers and viewers grow more mistrustful of the media and the polarization they see between large news organizations.

I am a graduate from the University of Missouri School of Journalism. Originally a photojournalism student, I designed my own interest area which combined print and digital news reporting and photojournalism. In Fall 2013 I made my first-ever trip out of the country to study for a semester at Universitá Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan, Italy.

I grew up in a small town in the northwest corner of Missouri. Besides photography and writing, I like a good day on the beach, a night out in a tent and my rescue cat, June.
